Hill End.

Welcoming Returned Soldiers.

After a couple of disappointments the people in this district were on Saturday last afforded the pleasure of welcoming home Captain [sic] and Trooper LANE [sic] of the Imperial Bushmen's Contingent, who have just returned from the front. They were met some distance out of town by a large crowd of people, and were escorted round the town by a procession. At the Council Chambers, where the Mayor on behalf of the residents formally welcomed them, the largest crowd seen here for years was assembled. The returned warriors are to be further entertained at a social during this week. A feature of the procession was a well got up imitation of a “Long Tom” gun drawn by 3 horses with uniformed riders. Both the Town and Salvation Army Bands took part in the procession, and must be complimented for the sweet music given throughout the proceedings. The town was gaily decorated with flags of all sorts and descriptions, you could see them everywhere, from the big Union Jack on the main buildings, down to the little kiddie with a coloured rag on a stick. Everything went beautifully, and the only fault to be found was the weather, and it was beastly. A gale of wind was blowing from the south-west with great rolling banks of clouds, a real cutting wind that seemed to be doing its best to tear the town down.

The social held on Monday night as a welcome to the LANE [sic] brothers, returned soldiers, was well attended. Several songs, recitations, &c., comprised the first part of the programme. Several gentlemen then spoke at some length regarding the war and Australia's part therein, after which refreshments were served round and the hall cleared for dancing. A capital entertainment was the result, all hands appearing to thoroughly enjoy themselves.

Trooper Arthur PORTER, a Hill End boy, just returned from the war, had a good welcome at the old mining town last week. The residents tendered him a social, during which he was presented with a gold medal suitably inscribed.
