HONOURING A GREENOCK CONSTABLE.

An interesting ceremony took place in the Recreation Room of the Greenock Central Police Office last night, when a large representation of the local Force met to honour Constable Thomas OGILVIE, who has received an appointment in the South African Police, under Major-General Baden-Powell. Captain Angus presided, and among others present were Superintendent Jamieson, Inspector Gunn, Sergeants J. Patterson, J. Bailey, T. Mackie, W. McJannet, Detectives D. Matthewson and John McKenna, etc. Captain Angus said that the4 object of the gathering was to present Mr OGILVIE with a token of their esteem on his departure for South Africa. He had been in the force now for several years, and was leaving, to the general regret of the whole constabulary. Constable OGILVIE he had recognised as one of the most efficient men in the Police Force, and he was very sorry indeed that he was leaving them. They all sincerely hoped, however, he would have a good passage to his destination, and that he would have a successful career. He (the Chief Constable) thought it was to be regretted that the constabulary did not get the opportunity of training to shoot, as the men would then be more efficient in the case of any emergency in the country’s history. In conclusion, he handed over to Mr OGILVIE a travelling bag, gold albert and appendage, together with a pipe, pouch, and tobacco, from the officers and members of the force, who all wished him long life, health and prosperity. Appropriate remarks were also made by Superintendent Jamieson, Inspector Gunn, Sergt. Bailey, and Constable Hugh McMillan, each of whom spoke in the highest terms of Mr OGILVIE and of the great regard entertained for him by the entire force. Mr OGILVIE suitably replied, and a vote of thanks was afterwards accorded to Captain Angus on the motion of Superintendent Jamieson.
