PRESENTATION TO VOLUNTEERS AT GOSFORTH.

At a smoking concert, held at the Brandling Villa Hotel, South Gosforth, advantage was taken of the opportunity to present gold medals, suitably inscribed, in addition to cigarette cases, silver-mounted pipes, pouches, and tobacco to several reservists and volunteers, who have returned from South Africa, where they have seen much hard service, and taken part in various engagements. There was a very large gathering of friends, and the men were given a hearty welcome. The chair was taken by Mr J. Thompson, who made the presentations. The following were the recipients – J.W. HEMBLIN, F. McQUILLIAM, T. BREWIS, J. BRYSON, C.R. THOMPSON, and H.H. SHERWIN. After the presentations, the concert was proceeded with, and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought a most enjoyable evening to a close. The following took part in the concert – The Abbey Quartette, Professor Harrington (ventriloquist), Messrs Carrick, T. Armstrong, J. Tyrell, Cole, Clark, Walter Merritt, R. Kay, T. Giles, G. Armstrong, and T. Martin. Mr J. Hobkirk ably acted as accompanist.
