BACK FROM THE WAR.

HONORING A RETURNED SOLDIER.

Inglewood, 3rd August.

On Thursday evening the residents of the Glenalbyn district mustered at the local State school to the number of about 120, for the purpose of joining in a public welcome to Trooper J. O'KEEFE, recently returned from South Africa. The gathering took the form of a social and supper. During the evening Mr Alf. Nixon, on behalf of the subscribers, presented Trooper O'KEEFE with a suitably inscribed medal. The recipient acknowledged the memento in the usual manner of a soldier, by coming to the point in a very few words.

BACK FROM THE WAR.

WELCOME TO PRIVATE J. O'KEEFE.

Glenalbyn. 7th August.

That loyalty to King and Empire which lies slumbering in the most remote corners awaiting but the note of patriotism to stir its sluggish pulses and set them throbbing to fever heat, was evidenced by the splendid reception accorded Private J. O'KEEFE by the residents of Glenalbyn on his return from South Africa. About 120 guests sat down to supper, which was served in a marquee erected in the school grounds. The tables were presided over by Mesdames Williams, Tresize, Spencer, O'Keefe, O'Brien, Roberts, and Misses Spears and Jolley. On behalf of the residents, Private O'KEEFE was presented with a handsome gold medal, suitably inscribed. The presentation was made by Mr Alf. Nixon, who assured the guest of the appreciative feelings entertained towards him. He then proposed the health of Mr O'KEEFE, which was drunk with musical honours. Dancing was indulged in till daybreak to the strains of excellent music provided by Messrs Morse and Fogarty. Mr J. Williams efficiently carried out the duties of secretary.
