At Flag Swamp on Friday evening a most successful social was held in honour of Trooper JONES. Mr Kennedy's woolshed was comfortably filled, in spite of the wet night. During an interval in the dancing Mr R. Hagan, in a few well-chosen remarks, presented Trooper JONES with a handsome watch, gold albert, and Maltese cross bearing the following inscription: — "From the residents of Flag Swamp, Goodwood, and Waikouaiti districts; presented to Trooper J. Jones, on his return from Transvaal war; July, 1901". Trooper JONES humorously replied, stating that it was worth coming all the way home to see so many friends and get such a handsome present. The following contributed towards the evening's enjoyment: Messrs W. Brown, W. White (Merton), and R. McClintock. Refreshments were provided on a liberal scale, and done ample justice to. Dancing was kept up with much spirit until 3 o'clock in the morning.

Trooper's Reception. — Following on the formal reception of Trooper James JONES in the Waikouaiti Hall last Monday, the Flag Swamp people on the following Friday night held a social gathering in Mr Kennedy's woolshed — the trooper's home being not far away. Although the weather was unfavourable, there was a good attendance, Mr Rowland Jefferis presiding. The Chairman called on Mr R. Hagan, who, after some felicitous remarks, presented Trooper JONES with a silver watch and albert chain as a token of regard from his numerous friends, in appreciation of his services in South Africa. The speaker said they all felt proud of the trooper, and were glad he had come back amongst them safe and sound, and they hoped he would live long to make use of the present he had just received. Mr Jefferis also congratulated the trooper on the present given him, and said when he went away to the war he knew it was to no play-work he was going, but that some hard fighting lay before him. JONES had acquitted himself well, and he (the chairman) called for three cheers from those present, which were heartily given. Trooper JONES, in reply, thanked them for the handsome present he had received, and thought it alone worth coming back for. He was also glad to see he had so many friends and well-wishers there to welcome him home. Dancing was then indulged in, interspersed with songs and other items, and an abundance of refreshments was supplied all round.

LETTERS FROM THE LITTLE FOLK.

Mildred while in Dunedin, at the time of the Royal visit was met at the station by the greeting, "D.L.F."! "I turned round, and two boys came up and spoke to me. They asked me my name, and I told them; then when I asked them theirs, they also told me; but it was not their right names, as I found out their real names, afterwards. My brother came home with the fourth contingent, and he got a splendid reception in Waikouaiti, and on the following Friday he was presented with a silver watch and a gold chain, with a Maltese cross hanging from it".

Corporal J.P. BROWN, of Goodwood, who served in the Sixth New Zealand Contingent, was accorded a social on his return from South Africa on Friday last; 18th inst., in Mr Kennedy's woolshed, Pleasant Valley. There were close on 200 people present. Mr Allcock (Mayor of Hawksbury) opened the proceedings by welcoming the corporal on behalf of those present. Dancing was then indulged in, and later on the Mayor, in a congratulatory speech, said there was a presentation to be made, and he called on a little girl (Miss Hannah Stewart), who, amidst applause, handed to the corporal a handsome gold albert chain and pendant, suitably inscribed, as a token of regard from the residents of the district. Various songs and other items were rendered by friends during the evening, refreshments being provided in abundance by Mr W. Williams, the caterer. A pleasant time was experienced by all, and the meeting broke up at 4 o'clock next morning.
