CLUNES. – On Thursday Corporal F.H. CARTER and Troopers A.S. McKENZIE and J. CROCKER were entertained in Queen’s Park. The Mayor (Cr. W. Blackband) presided. Handsome gold medals, suitably inscribed, were presented to each of the soldiers, amidst cheering and enthusiasm. In the evening the residents of Lord Clyde presented Trooper McKENZIE with a gold albert chain.

CLUNES.

A public demonstration, initiated by the Mayor, councillors and officers of the CIunes borough, was made on Thursday at the Queen’s Park in honour of the returned soldiers from South Africa, Corporal CARTER and Troopers McKENZIE and CROCKER. Subscriptions by the residents had provided a gold medal for each. The weather being fine, there was a large attendance of the public. The Mayor, members of the Council, and other public bodies were present, also a brass band, the Mounted Rifles under Sergeant-Major Taylor and cadets under Lieutenant Darcy, the school children of the town, and others. Subsequently Trooper McKENZIE was entertained by friends in the Lord Clyde district, and presented with a gold albert chain.

RETURNED SOLDIERS.

CLUNES. — The residents of Mount Beckworth accorded Trooper ROBINSON a hearty welcome on his return from the war. He is a son of Mr Henry Robinson, farmer, and served in the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles. The returned soldier was presented with a gold medal, suitably inscribed.

CLUNES

Tuesday.

Avery pleasant gathering took place on Friday evening, at the residence of Mr James Branigan, Beckworth, to welcome home Private J.W. ROBINSON, of the Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, who has just returned from the war. Cr J. Pickford occupied the chair, and after full justice had been done to all the usual toasts, he handed to the guest a handsome medal, which bore the following inscription: — "Presented to Private J.W. Robinson by Clunes district friends, in recognition, of services in South African war, 31/1/02". The recipient feelingly responded, end described his experiences, some of which were anything but pleasant, after which harmony, dancing, etc., concluded l a very pleasant evening.

CLUNES.

An entertainment, which comprised a welcome to the recently-returned soldiers of the district, and an effort in aid of the Clunes Free Library, was given in the town-hall, and was successful, the receipts amounting to nearly £20. The mayor (Mr W.J. Martindale) presided. Corporal P. FRY and Troopers H. BARKELL and W. FOLEY, with Corporals J. BAIRD, F.H. CARTER, and Trooper McLAUGHLAN, took part in the proceedings, opportunity being taken of the occasion to present the three first named with gold medals, suitably inscribed, subscribed for by the residents.

CLUNES. – At a patriotic gathering, returned soldiers Signalman H. BARKELL, Corporal P. FRY and Trooper W. FOLEY were each presented with gold medals by the Mayor, on behalf of the townspeople. The people of Ullina also made Trooper FOLEY a presentation.
