RETURN OF VOLUNTEERS FROM THE FRONT. – Five men of the Campbeltown contingent of active service Volunteers, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, got a most enthusiastic reception on arrival home on Tuesday afternoon last, when the town was en fete in honour of the occasion. The Volunteers were met at the pier by the local companies of the 5th V.B. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Artillery Volunteers, a large number of townspeople also being present. The Volunteers, on disembarking, got a great ovation. They were joined by the three Volunteers who had already returned from the front, and were escorted by the combined body of Rifle and Artillery Volunteers round the town and outskirts and back to the Mercat Cross in Main Street, where they were received by the Town Council. Provost Mitchell presented each of the active service men with handsome solid silver medals, suitably inscribed, given by the Provost, Magistrates, and Councillors. Major J.N. Mactaggart, officer commanding, returned thanks on behalf of the Volunteers for the enthusiastic reception accorded and medals presented. The active service men were afterwards entertained in the Victoria Hall, where their healths were proposed by Provost Mitchell and cordially pledged. Private James SMITH responded. Other toasts were given.
