Watkins-Pitchford | Herbert | | Lieutenant Colonel | Born in England, June 3, 1866, and is son of the Reverend J Watkins-Pitchford, MA, of Shropshire. He was appointed as Principal Veterinary Surgeon to the Natal Govt, in 1896, and was successful in devising the immunisation against the disease rinderpest which has since been universally adopted under the name of the serum system. He served throughout the Boer War, including the siege of Ladysmith, as PVO on the staff of the Natal Commandant, with the rank of Major. In 1902 he was appointed Bacteriologist to the Govt, of Natal and Director of the Natal Laboratory. He is a JP for the county of Maritzburg. He married May, daughter of Henry Willson, MD of Weybridge. | Natal Volunteer Staff |
