Lewis | Vernon | | Brevet Major | He was killed in action at Pieters Hill February 27th, 1900. He was the eldest son of Captain E Lewis of the Red House, Guildford, formerly of the Royal Scots Fusiliers and 8th King's Liverpool Regiment. Major Lewis was born September 1879, educated at Sherborne School, and entered the Royal Scots Fusiliers January 1892, being promoted Lieutenant March 1894, Captain October 9th, 1899, receiving his brevet Majority the following day. He was a first-rate sportsman and a well-known big game hunter. Major Lewis served as a signalling officer 1st brigade, in the Chitral Relief Expedition of 1895, under Sir Robert Low, receiving the medal with clasp. From 1897-99 he was employed with the West African Frontier Force, in which he served with distinction, and for the operations on the Niger 1897-98, including the expedition to Lapia, he was mentioned in despatches, LG, March 7th, 1899, and, in recognition of his services, was awarded his brevet Majority. Major Lewis embarked for South Africa in October 1899, and was present at the battle of Colenso and the subsequent fighting on the Tugela. The day he was killed his gallantry was very conspicuous. Major General Barton CB commanding the Fusilier Brigade in expressing his regret that Major Lewis had fallen wrote: "Major Lewis held the most important post in command of the company, on the extreme right, and on reaching the top of the hill he carried out my orders most admirably in swinging the right of our line round rapidly to the left and thus enveloping and enfilading the Boer position. The capture of this position on Pieter's Hill resulted directly in the relief of Ladysmith". Major Lewis at the time of his death was the youngest field officer in the army. He was mentioned in despatches, LG, February 8th, 1901.

Lewis | Vernon | | Brevet Major | This officer, who lost his life at Pieters Hill at the age of twenty-eight, had seen a considerable amount of service, both with the Chitral Relief Force and with the West African Frontier Force. He took part in operations on the Niger; was mentioned in Despatches, and honourably mentioned by the Colonial Office; he was awarded the medal with clasp, and the Brevet of Major, dated October 10, 1899, his commission as Captain bearing date of the preceding day. Throughout General Buller's operations he greatly distinguished himself by his intelligence and daring, and through his exertions the passage of the Tugela, which ultimately proved to be the key to Ladysmith, was discovered. | Royal Scots Fusiliers |
