Townsend | Samuel C Chetwode | | Lieutenant | BSACM Rhodesia 1896 (0). Samuel C. Chetwode Townsend was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, Royal Artillery, 14 February, 1890; Lieutenant 14 February, 1893. He served under Lieutenant Colonel Alderson with the Mashonaland field Force which left Beira on 6 July, 1896, to the relief of Salisbury, via Umtali. He was in command of the two 7-pounder guns, the only artillery with the force, and took a major part in the attack on Makoni's Kraal on the 3rd August. Salisbury was relieved on the 16th August. For his services he was mentioned in despatches London Gazette 9 March, 1897. He was promoted Captain 27 September, 1899, and Brevet Major the following day and, as a 4th class Ordnance Officer, held posts at both Mauritius and Bull Point. He died on 1 May, 1904.
