Rose | Charles Ernest | | Captain | He was killed in action near Wellow (one report stated Welkom), May 4th, 1900. He was the eldest son of Charles Day Rose of Hardwick House, Pangbourne, and 53 Berkeley Square, London, MP for Newmarket. Captain Rose was born in December 1872, and educated at Eton. He entered the Royal Horse Guards in April 1892, was promoted Lieutenant April 1893, and Captain October 1899. He served in the operations on the North-West Frontier of India, 1897-98, with the Tirah Expeditionary Force as extra orderly officer, receiving the medal with two clasps. Captain Rose also served in the operations in Sierra Leone, 1898-99, in the Protectorate Expedition, and in Nigeria, where he was specially employed from March 1899, and was slightly wounded. In South Africa Captain Rose had been on special service since March 1900, and was employed with the mounted infantry.
