Lister | Thomas | | Lieutenant | LISTER, THE HONOURABLE THOMAS, Lieutenant, was born in 1878, eldest son and heir to the 4th Lord Ribblesdale, and Charlotte Monckton (who died in 1911), daughter of Sir Charles Tennant, Baronet, of The Glen, Peeblesshire. He was gazetted to the 10th Hussars 1 December 1897, and was promoted to Lieutenant 5 November 1899. He served throughout the South African War, at the Battles of Paardeberg, Poplar Grove, Driefontein, Houtnek, Vet River, Diamond Hill, Wittebergen and the Relief of Kimberley, and was wounded once during this campaign. He was twice mentioned in Despatches, received both South African War Medals, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order [London Gazette, 26 June 1902]: "The Honourable Thomas Lister, Lieutenant, 10th Hussars. For services during the operations in South Africa". In 1903 he was selected for special service in Somaliland, serving there as Remount Officer till January 1904, when he was killed whilst carrying Despatches at the Battle of Jidballi, 10 January.
