Frank,

It has taken me several months to lay my hands on the Spink Circular from September 1977. The medal to E Dutton, Mafeking Town Gd, was on offer at £375.

QSA with clasp Defence of Mafeking: Pte A Brown, Mafeking C.C. & SA Police Good Service Medal (1st Type “Politie”): No 3106(M) 2/C Sergeant A C Brown.

Also engraved medallion on reverse of Victorian shilling, commemorating the Siege of Mafeking.

According to his SA Police Service Cards, which also confirms his entitlement to both medals, Allan Clement Brown was born on 14 Feb 1888. This means he turned 12 while serving in the Mafeking Cadet Corps (brain-child of Baden-Powell and regarded as the forerunner of the Boy Scouts) during the Siege of Mafeking. He joined the Transvaal Police on 14 Feb 1908, was absorbed in the SA Police Force after Union in 1910 and retired on 13 Feb 1938.
