The SAGS to Private J Meredith sold last week for a hammer price of £7,000.

SAGS (1) 1877-8-9 (1854. Pte. W. Green. 1/24th Foot.)

William Green was born in 1850 and attested for the 1/24th Foot on 15 July 1868, aged 18 years. Following service in “H” Company at St Helena 1876-77, he re-engaged at King William’s Town, 14 September 1878. He was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879, his effects being claimed by his father who also took delivery of his medal.

Sapper J. McLaren was serving with 5th Company, Royal Engineers, and was killed in action at the battle of Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879. The Royal Engineers had Lieutenant-Colonel Durnford, Lieutenant McDowell and 4 men killed at this battle.

The SAGS to Sapper McLaren hammered at GBP 12,000 this morning.

I’ve owned three Isandlwana medals in my collecting career - Bull 1/24, Lisbeck 1/24 and Rice 2/24. I miss them all, and wish I had kept at least one. Oh well, such is life, they were all wonderful to own for a little while.

Edwin Hughes enlisted at Wrexham, Denbighshire, on 5 December 1874, aged 19 years. He was killed in action at Isandhlwana on 22 January 1879, his effects being claimed by his mother, brothers and sisters.

Noonan's say that by an error of transcription the medal shows his number as ‘553’ as per the medal roll but his correct number was actually ‘533’, as confirmed in a letter from Norman Holme to J. B. Hayward in June 1976 and now sold with the lot.
