Also in the LadySmith Siege museum this fanciful portrayal of Lord Dundonald being the first to enter LadySmith when we all know it was Major Gough!

And H.Watkins-Pitchford in "Besieged in Ladysmith will tell you it was a patrol under Duncan MacKenzie. "well, Dunc. saw Ladysmithin the distance , and the sight was too much for his discipline"

David,

Winston Churchill wasn't with the initial relieving column which consisted of a squadron of ILH & a squadron of NC who rode in side by side.
Dundonald did tell Gough to wait but they ignored him and carried on and rode into Ladysmith at about 18h00, Dundonald and Churchill arrived about 20h00, after the celebrations were over.
Churchill also claimed to have been captured by Louis Botha at Chievely! He went on to be a polititian I believe.
