Many thanks, very interessting - just had a quick read, will have a propper read later. I guess the obsolete nature of "Susannah" is what gave rise to her being called "Old Susannah".

To complement Neville’s marvelous collection, herewith another 75mm Krupp shell fragment that was turned into a key- or watch chain fob. According to the engraving this example was from a shell fired (or found) near Kimberley on November 17, 1899. The reverse is also engraved: “2 R D K” the meaning of which someone on the forum may be able to explain.

Below a sketch of the Kimberley siege, with Carter’s ridge highlighted to give some context.

Everhard,

Great example. Nice to see something other than "KIMBERLEY SIEGE" engraved on one of these.

My guess is that 2 R D K stands for No 2 Redoubt, Kimberley. This was Long Cecil's position.

AI seems to think that "RD" is occasionally used by the military as an abbreviation for Redoubt.

What do you think the rest means?
K.S
N.17
1899

There is no unit I can find with the initials KS, so that could be Kimberley Siege
and perhaps 17 Nov 1899 is a date he will never forget?

EFV, At least we independently came up with the same explanation for the inscription.
