Just got this chaps Oorlog medal

His 'Vorm B' states he lived at Aloeboom, P.K.Langkrans, Kwazulul in 1942.

Served under V.K. E. Rabe and Generals Lukas Meyer and General Emmett.

Battles included 'Spieshoek' (translated as either Spies Corner or Spear Corner) and one I cant make out which looks like 'Ntalene'. This could be Mtalene which apparantly is also known as Itala? Is this noted as a clasp to a British Boer Medal?

Can anyone fill in any gaps here (particularly the battles)

regards

Wayne

Hi Wayne

Spieshoek is how the Boers referred to Blood River Poort (17 Sept 1901): Google Gough and Blood River Poort to get info.
The Boers referred to (Fort) Itala (26 Sept 1901) as Taleni. Again Google will enlighten you!

Thats great Henk

strange though that his main actions seem to have been in September 1901 under Louie Botha's 'invasion' but no mention on Botha as a General he served with on Vorm B!!

Also there seems quite alot on the battle of Fort Itala but can't find anything on 'Taleni' - is it the same action?

Finally would he have been present at both attacks on the Forts or just at Itala?

Regards

Wayne

PS Is there anyway of finding out about him from an ancestry point of view, ie Date of Birth/ death etc?

Hi Wayne

As I mentioned Taleni was the Boer name for Itala.

Botha was in overall command during the Sept 1901 invasion of Natal. Swart probably listed the names of Commandants and Veldcornets under whom he served.

What do you mean by "both attacks on the Forts"?

apparantly both Fort Prospect and Itala were attacked in sequence - does that mean he was present at both or was 'Prospect' a different 'action' altogether?
