Thank you for the information. Unfortunately none of the Clares we have found fit with the information, as this man says he was a "driver" with the Oxon & Bucks who was invalided out due to injuries sustained during the Boer War. We have checked as thoroughly as we can and am now wondering if this was a story made up to impress a young lady - they married only months after meeting in 1902

Wouldn't be the first time a story was made up - they are surprisingly common.

However, 'Driver' was a rank in the artillery and Army Service Corps. There is a J Clare on the medal rolls for the ASC - entirely likely he was employed alongside the Ox LI.

This doesn't help with the wounding - perhaps he had an accident and the cause was a tall tale?

Have you searched The Times newspaper - it mentions many men not found in the official casualty rolls.
