It's a black and white picture - pretty rare these days. So I suspect a scan of a ca.1937 photo.

The medals are still buried since 1937...

LOL, do you think so, the definition of the fabric in the background is quite remarkable!

However, given Sam's reply to Rory's question which I had not read, I must assume that they are indeed with the recipient, which is both fitting and perhaps where they belong.
Incidentally Rory, having now read this thread from it's begining, you could certainly expect to be arrested here for an act of desecration.

Sam, please do accept my apologies for failing to read your opening post properly and your subsecquent conversation with Rory.

Dear ArchieDoug,

What a great story. It hangs true but the Wauchope who gave him the vesta case was not the General but his nephew, Lieut A. G. Wauchope Black Watch, who was serving on his uncle's staff and was indeed wounded at the Battle of Magersfontein.

He also became a General.

Best wishes,

Justin

Superb Justin, you can see why that lighter/vesta case would have meant so much to him!

Dear Justin you've filled in the gaps! That makes complete sense. I think my great grandfather aided the nephew not the General and that was a thank you. It's just such a shame the medals and case have been buried

Thank you
Sam

Hi,

I hope you like the photo. This is Archibald Seafield Grant in his uniform. Despite the number of clasps being wrong the circumstances around the photograph leave no shadow of a doubt who it is.

i am half way through writing it up and will post more soon but thought you might like to see him.

Regards

Jim
