Hello, I'm aware my grandfather served in South Africa. I've his "Defence of Ladysmith" medal and clasp. Early next year I'm planning a visit to Ladysmith. I'm hoping to stand in a location he helped to defend. I've detected The Glosters were stationed at both Tunnel and Cemetery Hills. Do these locations both exist using these names? Does anybody know of any other locations where The Glosters were stationed? Any help/advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Redwing,

I have been looking into this. Romer's book mentions the Gloucesters being based at Tunnel Hill but Pearse says the Devons were based there too ( www.angloboerwar.com/books/61-pearse-fou...-x-the-great-assault ). I am not sure whether they were both based there or changed during the siege?

More investigation needed.

Have you tried the Gloucester Museum so see if they can clarify?

Best wishes
David

Redwing,

This article from The Standard on Monday, December 25, 1899 says the Gloucesters were based at Junction Hill.

This map from the Times History confirms Junction Hill for the Gloucesters.

Thanks one and all, Regards information of the location of the Gloucesters during the Defence/Siege of Ladysmith. Tunnel, Cemetery and Junction Hill's have all be quoted has the exact location. Accordingly, a map of Ladysmith at that time late 1899 early 1900 implies that all three locations are adjoining and therefore it is possible the Gloucesters could/may have been at all three locations during their time there at that time. I've contacted the Gloucesters museum for clarification; hopefully I'll receive a positive reply sometime this week?? Furthermore, I've contacted the Ladysmith Siege museum (who have been very helpful)for present day locations and the best ways to view of the three mentioned hills. As per the information supplied by "djb" the Devons were also recorded to have been based in the same area. I also believe the Kings Regiment (The Liverpools) were also based there at that time. What I'm also trying to establish if there is a memorial of a sort within the Ladysmith area dedicated to the fallen of the Gloucesters? Mike.
