I only have this picture. I know he had a daughter, Ellen Margaret Schumann, born in Maraisburg, Transvaal 1891, and a son, William John Schuman born 1893, Oudtshoorn, Cape Colony.

Hello Ollerman

Have you tried the Family Search South Africa web site?

www.familysearch.org/search/location/africa/south-africa

It maybe possible to trace the names you have provided and link them to the parents. With regard to the photograph, as previously mentioned it is very probable that the image was taken after the Boer war. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the gentleman in the picture did not serve in South Africa between 1899/1902. I have had a look at the military section on Ancestry using the Schumann surname for the Boer War and WW1. Interestingly, there were 27 entries for Schuman/ Schumann and Shuman. Also, the majority of the regiments were connected to mounted infantry, town guard and police. I have enclosed a medal roll which records 3 possible brothers called Schumann. I am no expert on uniforms but I wondered if the chap in the photograph could possibly be mounted police post Boer War?

A long shot I know, but without a name it is going to be difficult to provide an answer to your question. If you were successful in finding details on his children Ellen and William perhaps it may lead you to their father's name and possible profession. I wish you well in your future research.

Regards

Dave...

Many thanks for your response. I appreciate it. I have looked at all the possible variations of Schumann ( including the brothers you found - I think they were based in Willowmore, in the Eastern Cape). Not one leads to the right match. It is indeed a mystery. Thank you for your efforts!
