The story of the Long family must be one of the most tragic I have read from the ABW on the Imperial side of the conflict.
I agree with Rory, perhaps Valhalle, to die a warrior's death, was the only redemption he felt available to him?
How could he have returned home?
Very sad......

Crazy that he was permitted to go out on active service just a few weeks after shooting his sister, unless the authorities weren't aware of it, although that's unlikely because there was a brief report of the inquest in The Times on 1.9.1899.
