Hi I inherited this photograph, which includes my great-grandfather Arthur Whitfield seated extreme left, from my gran. It is titled "Transkeian Boer War Recruits, taken at Engcobo just before peace was declared in 1902" in her handwriting. All the persons are named. I would very much like to know what role these people, especially my great grandfather may have played in the war. The nominal role of Brabant's Horse has an Arthur Whitfield enlisted Dec 1899 and discharged to Dordrecht Co in Feb 1900, but seems to suggest he was from Cape Town, whereas my great grandfather lived in Idutywa

Any known relationship between Arthur Whitfield and Clem Whitfield? Clem looks young enough to be Arthur's son or nephew.

pvamstel,

I think this unit was the Transkei Mounted Rifles.

If you look at this page, you will see there are several Whitfields, including A and CAL as well as at least one other in the photo: A D Venables.

No much is known about what they did.
