My grandfather Herbert Eaton served as a Private in the 6th Dragoons in the Second Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. I know almost nothing of his military service and would like to discover more about him. Can someone tell me please if his military records are available?

Thank you

Addie,

His number was 3037 and he received the QSA with clasps CC and OFS.

Luckily, his service papers have survived. These are available for free at the National Archives or for a fee from FindMyPast.

Kind regards
David

Hello djb,

Thank your for replying and giving the information. Can you tell me please if there is any particular page, or search topic at the National Archives for access to my grandfather's military records? I've done a quick search but achieving 0 results.

Thank you,
Addie

Many thanks for the information Frank,

It is all very helpful to me. He was a groom and indeed progressed to being a coachman.

Thank you again,
Addie
