He died in South Africa, on 2nd February 1902, having served during the ABW as a Major in the Royal Scots Greys. He's said to have died in an accident at Lace Mines, but was he still a serving officer at the time of his death? The newspaper report of his death that I've seen doesn't mention that, nor do any of the modern-day articles about him.

FitzClarence was actually a serving member of the Militia, his Majority in the 3rd Battalion Royal Scots, he had never served in the 2nd Dragoons, that would, without any possible doubt whatsoever, have been a complete and utter anathema to any Rifleman, his death was the result of an accident on the 2nd of February 1902 and this is very clearly shown in WO100/319.

A brief glance at Watt, suggests he is interred at Kroonstad and confirms both circumstance and place of death to be correct.
