Names and numbers for the men who clearly served in South Africa during the Anglo Boer War are all shown on their medal roll in WO100/115 and WO100/303.
These men came from across the country and if a man with a particular number came from the same place as another with a consecutive number it was merely coincidental.

I am building a database of all British Empire participants for the Anglo-Boer War. It can be searched over the internet in many ways, but not in the way you asked. So I did a special query to give you the information you asked for.

Unfortunately FindmyPast does not allow searches by unit and town - a surname must always be entered. There is no easy way to find out how many men from a particular town served in a particular regiment.

I have my grandfather's service record. If as you say when person joins a regiment he is assigned a number. My grandfather's was 4215. If he joined with his friends, I was hoping they would receive a number in consecutive order with his. Also if the Regiment assigned the number there would be a consecutive list with names and date of joining/attestation etc.

Hello

The "consecutive list" you describe certainly exists for post WW1 period. I have never heard of one for the ABW period, the museum for the 5th Lancers would be a good place to ask.

No, for this period, a particular man received a number from his regiment, no two men could have the same number whilst actually serving at the same point in time, in the same battalion/squadron, the numbers need not have been consecutive, but, merely available within a particular regiment at that point.
