I had a look for A Whitfield on the QSA rolls and came across 3 men of this surname on the roll for the Transkei Mounted Rifles (WO100/277p144).

Not sure of this helps or diverts?

David, I rightly or wrongly dismissed the Whitfields in the Transkei Mounted Rifles and those by the same surname in the Frontier Light Horse/DMR as unlikely as the initials of the other Whitfields listed in these units didn't match those of Alfred Whitfield's brothers. From the names in the letter in an earlier post in this thread it would appear that the only brothers were David and Charlie. There may have been cousins. Hopefully Evyn will be able to confirm if the initials of the other TMR Whitfields match those of known relatives. The initials of the three FLH/DMR men were P.H., L.A., & O.A.

Cheers,

Mark
