I am trying to find out which volunteer unit my great grandfather was in!
His name was Harry COOKE born in 1872 in Bradford Yorkshire. I have a medal given to him for long service in the Volunteer Force. It has the head of EDWARDVS V11 REX IMPERATOR on the reverse side. There is an inscription on the rim of the medal as follows:
2755 SJT H. COOKE 2 / W.R. of Y. R.G.A.V.I was led to believe he was in the Boer war!!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Shane,

I had a quick look at the QSA rolls on Ancestry and there is no one called Cook(e) with this regimental number. I also tried the soldiers' papers on FindMypast and similarly drew a blank. Sorry!

The artillery did not have battalions, it was simply 2nd West Riding...

This was a militia unit, some of their number served in the Imperial Yeomanry.

There is 22916 Harry Orme Cook of the the 11th Coy (Yorkshire Dragoons), 3rd battalion IY and 29788 Harry Cook(e) of the 40 Company (Oxfordshire) 10 Battalion Imperial Yeomanry. See boerwarregister.com.

Papers for these chaps are at The National Archives, Kew.

Good luck!
