The date of Gale's wounding and lack of Defence of Ladysmith clasp is very worrying. An oversight in compiling the medal roll is not improbable, but as he got a medal with 8 clasps one would have thought he would have been aware he qualified for the DoL clasp, unless he wasn't there or wasn't bothered.

He is not in the casualty rolls, so the only source is White's despatch - we would need to see the original. The papers could have made a hash of printing it!
