There has long been a military base at Wynberg as it marks the midway point between Table Bay and False Bay. The first camp was established c 1804.

No 1 and No 2 General Hospitals were located here with a combined bed capacity of c 773. The hospitals operated between 20 October 1899 and 1 June 1902. There is still a hospital on the site today.

There was a Town Guard in Wynberg but it did not receive any medals.

Inside a tent in the field hospital at Wynberg

The military camp at Wynberg has been turned into a military hospital. Wynberg is a fair-sized village on the eastern side of Table Mountain and ranks as one of the most healthy among foreign stations. The scene in our illustration shows one of the tents in the hospital. The man on the right is the orderly of the RAMC in charge of the patient.
