One day I'll get to visit South Africa and this will certainly be one place to stay.

Last piece of information from the owner:

Hobkirk and his family moved to their "town house" while the fighting took place.
They allowed English officers to stay in the house while the war was ongoing.
As a thank you from the British, Hobkirk received a beautiful lantern, but unfortunately it has been removed.

If visiting the Colesberg area, I can recommend two excellent places to stay.
Both are wonderful, each in their own way. The first is close to the main road and is a legendary resting place, being halfway between Joburg and Cape Town; the second is a 15 km detour but definitely worth it for great Boer hospitality. Both serve karoo lamb you won't forget in a hurry!

[Now, I know tourists are worried about crime and security in South Africa. But in these places you don't even have to lock your door. The risk of being struck by lightning is far higher than the risk of having your iPhone stolen. Seriously. And that is true of most South African War touring areas. I have walked the battlefields for decades and I've never, ever seen - or even heard of - anything bad.]

I wonder if the forum would be enhanced by a section on "Where to stay when touring the South African Battlefields" - with recommendations from forummers who've stayed there?
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

I think that would be a good idea. What do you think DJB?

Evening all,

I would like to add my support for your proposal!
Probably won't be possible for this year, but maybe in 2022 I hope to be making a battlefield tour. Apart from the obvious Spion Kop, Mafeking, Kimberley, Ladysmith etc., I would like to get to Worcester Hill, Slingersfontein.
So I would very much welcome a list of recommended places to stay.
