From the Underwood stereo photographs of the Boer War a view of the Cemetery in Neutral Grounds near Pieter’s Hill. Two graves markers are visible for former crew members of the H.M.S. Powerful. Right the grave for Able Seaman Hans A. Lister (died of enteric on February 2, 1900) and left the grave for Private H. Newman who died three days later from same decease.

Please does anyone know if Able Seaman Edward Dunn of HMS Powerful still has a marked grave at Ladysmith, I assume perhaps not?

169637 Able Seaman Edward Frost Dunn (d. 13/02/1900) did once have a grave marker at Intombi. All the graves of the Powerful men who died in Ladysmith (c.25 at Intombi) appear to have been marked with the same form of wooden cross (with short upper arm).

Some years later, as the wood started to rot, all the original crosses were replaced with iron markers. Still later, many of these appear to have been moved from their original positions, no longer marking the grave sites they were first placed over. AB Dunn's actual resting place was in row 9, but his cross was in row 3 by the time the typed list of graves at Intombi was created (1960s/1970s?). Finally, in the 1970s, all of the iron crosses were taken down and scrapped, leaving only the marble monuments that can still be seen at Intombi today.

So, yes, AB Dunn did once have a cross, but, sadly, no longer.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF ALL THE SURVIVING MONUMENTS CAN BE SEEN HERE

Stack of discarded crosses, photographed at the Natal Provincial Administration Works Department in 1978. It is quite likely that AB Dunn's iron marker was in this pile.

Hello Neville,
Thankyou for your confirmation, it never occurred to me to just open the bookcase and consult In Memoriam, of course, had I done so, I would have the answer, but, I would not be looking at the photographs you kindly posted on here, so very many thanks again.
Sincerely Frank
