JACKSON, Herbert Kendall, Major, was born 17 Mar 1859, son of the late Thomas Jackson, of Springfield Place, Chelmsford. He was educated at Wellington College, and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, and joined the Royal Artillery, as Lieutenant, 18 December 1879: became Captain 29 Oct 1886: Major 1 Nov 1896. He served in the South African War 1900-01: was present at the Relief of Mafeking. He received the Queen's Medal with four clasps: despatches 16 Apr 1901, and was created a companion of the Distinguished Service Order (LG 19 Apr 1901) : "Herbert Kendall Jackson, Major, Royal Artillery. In recognition of services during the recent operations in South Africa." The insignia were presented in South Africa 14 Aug 1901, by the Duke of Cornwall and York.

He became Lieutenant Colonel 5 Aug 1904: brevet Colonel 5 Aug 1907: Colonel 5 Aug 1909: Temporary Brigadier General 1 Apr 1910, to 31 Mar 1914: Commanding R.A. 2nd Division, Aldershot Command: Temp Brig General 5 Aug 1914 : Brig General Jackson served in the European War 1914 15. He was twice mentioned in despatches and created a CB in 1915. He retired from the staff 27 Dec 1917, with the rank of Brigadier General.

Major Jackson married in 1904, Winifred Gladys, daughter of the late G.T Llewhellin, of Brookfield, Blandford, and they have one son and two daughters.

QSA (2) Relief of Mafeking, Orange Free State (10663 Gnr. J. Madge, M Bty. R.H.A.). DNW March 2007.

John Madge was born in Paighton, Devon and enlisted in the Royal Artillery in July 1895. Posted to ‘M’ Battery, Royal Horse Artillery in December 1899, he served out in South Africa from February to December 1900, when he was present at the relief of Mafeking and in other operations in the Orange Free State.

Madge was still serving at the time of his death from tuberculosis at Exeter in July 1911.

QSA (3) Relief of Mafeking, Orange Free State, Transvaal (77269 Dvr: F. Woolley, M’ Bty: R.H.A.), partially officially corrected

M Battery - ‘Arrived at the Cape about 20th March 1900. Formed part of Colonel Mahon’s force for the relief of Mafeking. Specially mentioned twice in Colonel Mahon’s report of 23rd May 1900.’ (British Regiments in South Africa 1899-1902, J. Stirling, refers);

Only 2 Sections of M Battery RHA took part in the Relief of Mafeking.
