Lot 31 in the City Coins No 64 auction is a South AFrican Ghost Date QSA to Johannesburg Mounted Rifles, and is described as a prime rarity in the catalogue.

Thanks again!

Hunter's medal was issued 14-10-1903, he first served in the BSAP (to get a Rhodesia clasp) off the JMR roll. Why he wasn't issued the QSA off the BSAP roll is not clear from the rolls. So, it appears the 50k ghost dated medals weren't used up first and some were left over to issue as required in 1903 (and later).

Hello all,

I failed to find time to search my collection for ghost date QSAs to colonial units. However, my first QSA purchase of the year to the Protectorate Rgt is a very faint ghost date medal issued in 1902.

I bought this medal for a particular reason that I hope to be confirmed when some books arrive from SA in the a fortnight.
