This combination of 5 is fairly common. Given the Natal and Cape Colony bars cannot be awarded together this leaves only the possibilty of the Rhodesia bar being awarded to an individual with these 5 - so in theory a 6 bar medal possible - right? Has anyone seen one?

Jon,

I think you're theoretically correct but I don't think I have ever seen that combination.

Kind regards
David

PS that's an excellent picture

Good Morning Jon.....

I have seen one with 6 bars but I am afraid to say that it was a made up medal and not correct.....

I must say though that I have never seen a correct one.....

I have a QSA and Imperial Yeomanry Long Service to 12403 Trooper TA Smith 7th Coy 18th Imperial Yeomanry, that has:
Cape Colony
Rhodesia
Orange Free State
Transvaal
South Africa 1901

There is no reason why he could not have got the 1902 date bar if he had hung around and joined another unit, but I think that is what would make it harder. Perhaps the type of troops who got so many state bars were those who had homes in the UK to return to, so didn't wait until 1902.

Hi

I sold the QSA to 12775 Tpr C Fowkes: Staff, 18th IY on City Coins Sale61 (Lot 80). It was a confirmed 6 non-battle bar medal, and the only such one I had ever come across

Henk,

I see that Tpr Fowkes' QSA had the clasps CC Rhod OFS Tr SA01 & SA02.

The catalogue called it a 'rare example' and I think they were right.

Looking at the roll for the 18th IY (WO100/127p174), there are 11 men out of 19 on this page with the four state clasps.

Best wishes
David
