Hi

For myself, I enjoy when reading some article / story and there is a reference made to something else one has seen or has in your collection.

Does anyone have a comment about the story.

Hi

I know that this is not on the Boer war Topic - but I would like to share 2 documents that I have with the GM Rudolph medal which I think are both of interest to the build up of the Boer War.

1. Document appointing GM Rudolph to proceed to Ceteswayo to discuss the boundary dispute. This is the start of the Zulu War.

2. Document telling GM Rudolph not to take an "active and hostile role" during the emergencies in 1881 - 1st Boer war. Note the comment about unnecessary bloodshed in the letter.

I think these are both very interesting.

Hi

And lastly the newspaper article (in Afrikaans) telling the story of the defence of Utrecht. Maybe an Afrikaans speaking member can translate parts of it far better than I can.

It talks about the 67 volunteers and that only 7 appeared and later in the article it talks about Ceteswayo attitude to the English and that he tried to kill the 2 members of the commission on their way back.

This is clearly a family story - but is it all true?

Wonderful stuff Munroe :)

What you say is so very true - I often stumble upon other names whilst researching the recipient to hand and this, frequently, leads me to try and track down those other peoples medals as well.

Although not ABW (forgive me David) I once obtained a WWI trio to a chap who was so emotionally distraught by the fact that he had been responsible for the death of a fellow railway worker in the early 1920's that he kept all the press cuttings in his WWI chocolate box along with his medals.

His name was Kershaw and the unlucky fellow was Colloty - I did the next best thing - tracked down Colloty's family and acquired his sons medals (he had been too young to go to war himself.)

They now tell a story and I was able to tell the family all about it.

Regards

Rory
