Sgt Shepherd served in C Company and was mentioned for good work in Lord Roberts Despatch dated 10th of September 1901.
Author of “War on the Veldt. The Anglo-Boer War Experiences of the Wiltshire Regiment” published 2024 by the Rifles Berkshire and Wiltshire Museum.

Described as:

18-year-old Frederick John Best from Twyford, Dorset attested for service with the Wiltshire Regiment on 15th June 1899. He served in South Africa from 14th September 1900 until 21st May 1903 and is confirmed on the medal roll of the 2nd Battalion for the medal and 3 clasps, he was also awarded the Kings South Africa Medal. He continued serving through to the Great War and served in France from 1st June 1915 until 8th November 1916 when he returned to the having suffered a GSW to the neck. He was discharged unfit for further service due to wounds on 20th September 1917 having completed 18 years and 98 days service. He was awarded a 1914-15 trio and Silver War Badge for his Great War service.

Frederick John Best served in A Company throughout the Boer War.

Willie Egbert White was born in Corsley, Wiltshire, on 8 September 1880 and attested for the Wiltshire Regiment at Devizes on 7 September 1899, having previously served with the 1st Wiltshire Rifle Volunteer Corps. He served with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War from 14 September 1900, and transferred to the Army Pay Corps on 30 November 1902.

Promoted Sergeant on 30 November 1908, he saw further service during the Great War on the Western Front from 18 August 1914, and was promoted Staff Sergeant on 30 November 1916. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal per Army Order 106 of 1918, and was promoted Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 30 November 1919.

He was discharged on 6 September 1920, and died in York on 30 December 1939.

Whilst serving with the Wiltshire Regiment he served with G Company.
