The Penny Illustrated Paper from 31st October 1908 carried a (poor quality) picture and description of how the Admiralty has commissioned the creation of a shield to be made from the war medals of deceased pensioners.

I wonder if the shield is still in existence?

I hope that someone will reply that the 'shield' still exists and is well cared for, thereby maintaining my illusion that Britons treasure their heritage to a degree that prevents the destruction of such relics. On the other hand, it was a rather unusual fate that befell the medals that make up the shield.

Coincidentally, yesterday afternoon I watched an edition of the 'Antiques Roadshow' that was filmed at Greenwich in what must have been the grandest building ever inhabited by pensioners. By comparison, the Kloof Rest Homes, where I now reside, are shamefully simple.

Brett,
I very much doubt if any rest home here, is a home to such a fine collection of Imperial Light Horse as your home in Kloof!

It's my belief that Kloof is home to some much treasured and valued guests.

Thank you for your comments. Although many books and other treasures had to be given new homes before we moved, most importantly I have kept the medal collection and its records intact, so that is keeping me happy.

I am sure that your medal collection would keep me "very happy" too!
