He took part in the Jameson Raid and served in the Natal Police during the Boer War (Queen’s Medal with clasps for Talana, Defence of Ladysmith, and Laing's Nek). He died at Kroonstadt on 9 February 1916, as reported in a local Bristol newspaper:
‘Mr. Harry Cottrell, of Westbury-on-Trym, has just received news of the death of his brother, Alfred George Cottrell, at Kroonstadt, South Africa. Deceased, who had many friends in Bristol, was the youngest son of the late Mr. Henry Cottrell, of this city. For the last five-and-twenty years he has been in South Africa, and was last home on a visit about three years ago. He fought through the Matabele Wars, against Zulus and against Boers. He was in the Jameson Raid, and went through the Siege of Ladysmith. Latterly he has been fighting against the Germans in Africa, and was invalided at Korrnstadt, where he died on the 9th February.
