Mick - The Natal Field Force Casualty Roll has a number of confusing entries, one of which is the listing of casualties on 21/1/1900 as Spearman's Camp. The action was in fact Venter's Spruit. Spearman's Camp was the British base camp. The wounded brought back to camp were simply first logged there. This will be helpful to know if you want to research the action further.

Likewise with casualties on 5/2/1900 which are often listed as Potgieter's Drift but in fact were at Vaal Krantz, or possibly the diversionary attack on Brakfontein. Potgieter's was the British base camp at that time.

There are also many entries of casualties in the Ladysmith relief force which are shown as 'Ladysmith' before 28/2/1900 when it was relieved which is of course impossible. These are invariably casualties from various actions in the Tugela Heights which eventually led to the relief.

Regards

David
