Craigoaus,

That was a nice purchase from the Noble auction.

My information is that he served in the Kaffrarian Rifles 18 October 1899 to 5 September 1900 and 30 November 1900 to 30 May 1901

WO100/254p35 lists the clasps Wepener and CC. These two clasps plus SA01 were issued 8 Jun 1909 to the OC Kaffrarian Rifles.

His SA01 clasp is listed on WO100/254p105. No subsequent service is listed on the KR rolls.

The KR nominal roll says he was discharged 15 September 1900 ( angloboerwar.com/unit-information/south-...les?showall=&start=1 )

I am having difficulty verifying his service in either Roberts' Horse or the UVR. Kaplan does list this information in his Wepener roll but I cannot confirm it. Also, soldiers who deserted were usually refused medals.

Kind regards
David

Hi David, Yes I am pleased with it, picked up another as well which I will be investigating before too long.

I had a quick look for his other service and good not find and I was surprised to see the desertion mention considering a medal was awarded.

I'll keep looking, never know what might turn up.

Cheers
Craig

Craig,

You're right that you never know what you might dig up.

Good luck!

As the owner of the data on FmP, I looked into Jones and his entry in Kaplan's roll. Unfortunately Kaplan, like anyone else who has copied information made a transcription error. The information regarding UVR, Robert's Horse and desertion belongs to a soldier two lines up - CW Jarvis.

This is from the KR roll 105/p254.

In building The Register just about every source I have consulted, ancient and modern, has made such errors or introduced them. The Register, being a database, will be corrected today, FmP in a few weeks. Kaplan never.

Bit of a shame Jarvis looks more interesting.

7 months ago, on this very thread I posted details of a Steinaeckers Horse medal to a C E Jarvis. It had a Wepener clasp to which he was seemingly not entitled. Could this be the same man , who was noted as C W Jarvis ?
