I've just won this QSA on Spink in a speculative bid which I didn't think would pay off...

Does anyone know what happened at Doornfontein on 13 January 1902?

J. Wall joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers circa January 1900 and was posted from the Depot at Wrexham to join the 5th (Provisional) Battalion at Devonport. Embarked for South Africa in April 1901, he served with the 22nd Mounted Infantry and on 13 January 1902 was severely wounded in the action at Doornfontein. Recovered from his wounds, he was transferred to the Reserve later that year; sold together with a letter from the Regimental Museum regarding this Medal. Further entitled to two dated clasps to the Medal.

There was a bayonet charge against 400 boers on that date.

A Major Randolph Edward Whitehead - 1st Royal Munster Fusiliers
Killed in action at Doornfontein 13th January 1902. Aged 40. Son of Rev. Thomas Whitehead, vicar of Shustoke, Warwickshire. Born June 1861. Killed when leading his company (only 80 stong) in a bayonet charge against a ridge held by 400 Boers. Major Whitehead fell about 50 yards from the ridge, but the Boers were driven out of their position
You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.

Dave

A not-very-well-known action - which is a pity.
Attached is a cut from Palmer regarding Maj. Whitehead:

Here is a cut from Maurice regarding the action:

Here is a cut from Stirling:
