I have the medals to Dr R.A. Buntine who was put forward for the VC for turning back and lifting a dismounted trooper onto his horse whilst under heavy enemy fire.

This incident took place, if memory serves, on 3 November 1899 during the engagement at Long Valley. Lt Howard-Gill of the 21st Battery, R.F.A., who was present at the time, wrote disparagingly of the incident but, and here's where I need help, he mentions that a hand-drawn picture appeared in The Graphic under the heading "A Gallant Candidate for the VC." (see attached excerpt from the diary)

Is anyone able to post a picture of this? It would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Rory

Hi Rory......

Do you know when that was written????? I have bound copies of The Graphic from January 1900 to the end of June 1901 and a few loose copies Jan. to March 1902......

The bound books were used as packing material between furniture shipped from UK to antique shop here to stop the furniture being damaged..... When owner unpacked container he threw away lots of the books and I was able to salvage the ones above.....

No idea Mike - I suppose what narrows it down is that it was his diary entry. I would guess at any date from mid-November 1899 till end of January 1900.

Rory,

Tried doing an online search for “Buntine” in The Graphic of 1899 & 1900 and came up with no hits. But further investigation showed all the 1899 editions were missing and only the first 6 months for 1900 were present.

“Buntine” gives lots of hits in other papers for 1899 & 1900 but limiting it to illustrated pages reduces them to one – The Illustrated London News 25 November 1899. The article contains a mugshot of him and what appears to be a few lines on the incident you are interested in. Happy to furnish a copy of the article if you have not already found it.

David.

Thank you Mike and, yes, I have that one thanks David. Methinks my diarist, Lt. Howard-Gill was possibly mistaken or got the heading wrong. He mentions Maud as the artist - there was a W.T. Maud who sketched for The Graphic but.....
