Hi Dave,
Thank you very much. The QSA is to a J Bennett and the numbers are consecutive, so it would seem an excellent possibility that they were related and perhaps this medal is too the father. The fact that he was British and from Croydon opens the door for research in the UK, which I will do! Thank you so much for the leads. Now, on with the quest! :)

Hi Clive,
Thanks for following up with me. The book is basically a very basic book on the war that includes black and white photos of the various monuments and graves throughout Natal along with some lists of what regiments were where etc. I'm disappointed and apart from seeing monuments and graves I'll never have the opportunity to see, the book has little to offer. It was published in 1971 and may have been a good addition to the corpus on the AngloBoer War, but with such excellent books as David Biggins is publishing on the market now, it's not particularly helpful.

John,

I started to have a look at the records for John Bennett on FamilySearch but, as you might imagine, even filtering for South Africa, there are a lot of matches (286). There are no matches for John Scott Bennett, filtering for South Africa,

Hi David,
Thanks so much for the link! It is very informative and again confirms the recipient’s medal. Thank you for researching Bennett. I am persevering, but no luck so far. Hope springs eternal and perhaps the Croydon connection will prove fruitful.
All the best,
John
