Hi,

I am new to this forum and am finding it very difficult to navigate!

I am helping my neighbour, a retired Lieutenant Colonel, to research his grandfather who served in the boer war and the First World War.

I am trying to find out which boer war medals he was awarded with which clasps as these are missing from his 1914-15 star trio.

His name was 22288 Trooper Oliver Arthur Smith 82nd Imperial Yeomanry.

I believe there is a book which shows the medal rolls but I don’t have access to this; can somebody please help me?

Many thanks,

Rob

From his IY papers:

at discharge:

He had the scar when he attested.

Attested in London 1 February 1901. Discharged 16 August 1902.

NOK: His mother, Elizabeth Anne Smith, 47 Vincent Street, Regency Street, Westminster

His signature

He was single.

His IY papers are available from Ancestry or at the National Archives

He earned QSA (5) Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1901, South Africa 1902. This is verified on the medal roll (WO100/128p153).

Interestingly, he is listed on a roll for his state clasps under the title 'Reservists S M (South Metropolitan) Gas Company' (WO100/371p5)

There is a letter from the South Metropolitan Gas Company asking Earl Roberts if the medals could be issued to their men ahead of a dinner in their honour to be held at Crystal Palace in November 1902:

Best wishes
David
