From the next City Coins auction, November 2020

QSA (3) DoL, Tvl, L Nek (5653 Pte. T. McDermott. Liverpool Regt.)

“Buller met with some opposition on the 23rd August near Van Wyk’s Vlei, and towards evening two companies of the 1st Battalion Liverpool Regiment entered by mistake a hollow out of sight of the main body, where they came under a heavy fire, losing 10 men killed, and 1 officer and 45 men wounded.”

Roberts’ dispatch of 10 October 1900 (LG 8 Feb 1901, p867)

Pte McDermott was severely wounded and died the same day.

He is buried in Machadodorp.

QSA (4) Cape Colony, Laing's Nek, Belfast, South Africa 1901 (2443 Pte. J. Foster. L'Pool: Regt.), top clasp loose

John Foster was born at Liverpool in 1870 and was a painter upon his enlistment on 26 April 1888. Having been discharged to the Reserve in September 1894, he was recalled and served in South Africa during the Boer War from 24 March 1900-9 April 1901.

He was captured at Helvetia on 29 December, 1900.
