A final piece of information:

"On the 26th of March 1900, thirty-five year old Captain William Eyre Matcham who normally commanded B Company, assisted by No 1443 Sergeant J. Hart, was authorised by order of General Clements to form ‘Matcham’s Horse,’ a small force of twenty three Mounted Scouts under his command, consisting of eight men taken from the Wiltshire Regiment, five from the Royal Irish Regiment, five from the Bedfordshire Regiment and five from the Worcestershire Regiment. Their horses and saddles were taken from Boers who had surrendered".

Ian,
Many thanks, he certainly looks the part!
Well worth £5 to have a copy and to put a face to Sergeant Hart.
I am most grateful for your help.
