Described as:

Charles Crawford Ferguson, born 08Sep1874 at Adelaide, Sth Aust; in service with A Battery Sth Aust Field Arty around 1895 as a Gunner at Adelaide Depot; to Lieut 26Sep1900; was one of 40 men from A Battery to volunteer for service in Boer War as Mounted Infantry; Emb.09Feb1901 with 5th Sth Aust Imp Bushmen's Contingent; Disemb.23Mar1901 at Port Elizabeth; amalgamated with 6th Sth Aust Imperial Bushmen about one month later; unit carried out continual sweeps, patrolling, scouting and fighting; RTA and arrived 27Apr1902; returned to duty with A Battery; last noted in Reserve of Officers 01Jul1921.

Noble Numismatics say 'James Herbert Hendrie, 4th (South Australian Imperial Bushmen) Contingent. Enl. at age 22, single and a jockey; Emb.01May1900; Disemb.19Jun1900 at Port Elizabeth; placed in a composite regiment of Australian Colonial contingents in General Clements Column; present at Bethlehem, Rhenoster Kop and Wittebergen with multiple actions; RTA 05Jul1901; Disemb.27Jul1901 at Adelaide, Sth Aust.'
