Dear Forum
A big thank you to everyone who has provided information regarding Private Louis Williams 1st Welsh Regiment.
I thought it only fitting to upload his QSA and the Boer War memorial in his home town of Merthyr Tydfil .
best regards

Dave F

Though Kapt. Oliver "Jack" Hindon was the train-wrecker responsible for your man's death, Hindon was a famous man, and undoubtedly a great Boer hero. He came to fame on 20 January 1900, at the battle of Tabanyama. Three Boer scouts of Edwards Verkennerkorps, named Slegtkamp, de Roos and Hindon, occupied an advanced part of the crest of Tabanyama from which the rest of the Boer forces were in the process of withdrawing. Eventually just the 3 Boers remained in position. Gen Hart was about to order a bayonet charge of the Boer line when these three Boers began firing furiously from their left flank. They also waved a large Republican flag [Vyfkleur] which added to the British concern that a Boer headquarters was on their flank and thst, if they charged forward, they would be enfiladed or even cut off. Hart called off the bayonet charge while artillery focussed on the 3 Boers, who miraculously survived. The opportunity for a bayonet charge never presented itself again. The photos show the 3 men re-enacting their heroism for the camera; and de Roos and Slegtkamp standing with their "vyvkleur" flag.
The past is not dead. In fact, it's not even past.

Dave and others interested
I thought there was an impression of this particular action in "After Pretoria, The Guerilla War." Here it is on page 919 - from a sketch by Lionel James

Regards
IL.

This is Frank Dadd's original drawing of the Alkmaar engagement. First published in The Graphic, on August 10 1901 (p.181).
