On the 17th of October 1899, the German steamship Kaiser, so as not to be caught in the Red Sea by the Royal Navy, disembarked four thousand cases of ammunition at Port Said, after being chased through the Mediterranean by HMS Thetis, a second-class Cruiser. The ammunition had been shipped from Hamburg and amongst its passengers were several German officers bound for the Transvaal. Creswicke.
